Squaw Peak by Darrin Chandler [24 April 2003]
Arizona governor Janet Napolitano has made a big mistake recently. She's pushed through the renaming of Squaw Peak to Piestewa Peak, pressuring people and violating long-standing rules in order to advance her own private agenda. Popular sentiment seems to be against the name change. The majority of Native Americans seemed unruffled by the old name. There's a good summary statement in an op/ed piece by John Decker in the Arizona Repulic. FYI: in the 1800's Squaw Peak was named Squaw Tit Peak, but that was found offensive by Christian settlers.
